Personalized learning is instruction tailored to meet the varying learning needs of the increasingly diverse learner population. This study explored current personalized learning research efforts in education and learning sciences as well as computer science through a systemic review of the literature. It also analyzed how these studies aligned with the framework of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), aiming to provide researchers from different fields of study with a clear picture of personalized learning research through a lens of the UDL framework. The results indicated that most current research applied advanced technologies to personalize learning, but failed to explore how to operationalize personalized learning as a whole school approach with regard to the design and implementation of these environments. Moreover, few studies had involved learners with disabilities, who have demonstrated the greatest need for personalized support, leaving the impact of personalized learning on this population still unknown.
